History of the CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ORCHESTRA TOP The orchestra has its origin in a single concert given in Beaulieu
Abbey Church in 1971 by a small ad hoc group of players to accompany
the New Forest Singers, the ‘baby’ of Ward Gardner, Medical Officer of
Fawley refinery. He was particularly interested in, and a fine interpreter
of renaissance and classical music. This group quickly became established
as a permanent chamber orchestra, calling itself the SOLENT SINFONIA with Ward as its permanent conductor, giving concerts in the Art Gallery, The orchestra has had only two permanent Leaders up to 2012: |
